Proper Clothing For Working Outside In The Cold

People who work outside all the time usually know the secrets to staying warm or comfortable. Just putting on a coat isn’t always the answer, because you can get too hot even when the weather is cold.  For the average homeowner, who has to work outside only some of the time, properly dressing for the cold can seem like a mystery.  The clothing you wear matters, so it may be a good idea to get some Carhartt clothing at your local hardware store. But even then, it is important to know how to use clothing to best protect you from the elements.

Layering is a great way to stay warm. One big heavy coat is not usually a good idea. Several layers of lighter Carhartt clothing is a better strategy. As the weather warms up, or as you warm up from working, you can remove one layer at a time until you reach your comfort level.

When applying layers, use loose-fitting clothing that will trap heat next to your body.  Sweating can become a problem as well, if you have too much clothing on. A layer next to the body acts as a wick that can get moisture from sweating off your skin. Cotton is not a good option, as it will take heat from your body as it takes moisture out when it gets wet. Wool, fleece or polypropylene are better options. Goose down is great when it is dry, for instance, but when wet it loses its insulating value.

The wicking layer is next to your skin. it is called this because it takes moisture away from your skin but retains the heat.  On top of that, it is good to have a light insulating layer. Heavier layers can then be applied depending on the severity of the cold.  Try to not use too heavy of a layer as you want to be able to adjust your Carhartt clothing to fit your activity and comfort level.

A windproof and waterproof layer is also important, especially if you are in the rain or snow.  Don’t forget your hat as well, because 30-50 percent of your body heat escapes through your head.  A good Carhartt clothing head covering can be as effective as all your layers covering your body.

A two-layer sock system is also recommended when the weather is severely cold. Wearing wool socks as the inner layer acts as a wick just like a shirt does. This can move moisture away from your feet without losing the insulating powers. The second layer of socks is added insulation. Don’t forget to also have some gloves to protect your hands as well.
