What Is an Industrial Chiller?

Industrial chillers may be defined as a certain type of industrial level refrigeration or cooling system. These systems are intended for several types of usage. One of those types of usage is to chill or cool a particular type of liquid which is required for certain industrial processes. Another type of usage is to cool and dehumidify the air in an industrial or commercial premise. As you can understand, these are more than simply ‘a refrigerator’ or ‘a freezer’. They are systems of certain types of industrial level equipment intended especially for industrial-level, specialised usage. They are required and used in various types of industries. So How Does an Industrial Chiller Work?

This is how industrial chillers cool the particular type of liquid which is required for some or any industrial process. The chiller removes the heat from the liquid using either of two methods.

  • One is by what is known as the vapour-compression refrigeration cycle. Vapour-compression refrigeration means lowering the temperature of a substance by removing the heat from it and putting that heat somewhere else. Vapour-compression refrigeration is widely used in both domestic and industrial situations.

  • The other is by what is called the absorption refrigeration cycle. The absorption refrigeration cycle is one which uses a heat source, i.e. waste heat from industry or heat from fossil fuels to provide the heat necessary to power the process of cooling. This system of refrigeration can be used for food storage or air-conditioning as well as in chillers of an industrial level. It is an efficient form of cooling as it can make use of waste heat.

Once the liquid substance is cooled by whatever method, it goes on to the next stage. It may either be run through what’s known as a heat exchanger. Or it may be will be sent through a water or air process stream. A by-product of refrigerated cooling is waste heat, which may be recycled for some other purpose, such as heating. For the cooling and dehumidifying process of air in industrial and commercial premises, chilled water is used. The water for this purpose can be air-cooled, water cooled or evaporatively cooled. Water-cooling is generally considered to be the most advantageous from the environmental point of view.
