Pinterest. It’s the place we go when our idle minds need some new inspiration, and it brought me to a quote I hadn’t seen before. “Life will only change when you are more committed to your dreams than you are to your comfort zone.” I’m not sure who said it, but it got me thinking about my mood lately, and how complacent I have been with my quilting. It has been a while since I have tried anything new, a new style, a new design. I seem to get stuck in a rut with the same old things, my quilting comfort zone, if you will. It made me determined to try something new, big, BOLD. Nothing works better to rekindle that old flame, the love for your hobby such as dreaming big and reaching for the sky. Everyone needs a little push sometimes, and this seemed to be mine.
It got me thinking about the new Dream Big floral panels from Hoffman California Fabrics. All of their designs are innovative and imaginative, but these new Dream Big panels take the cake. The flowers look like they are about to burst out from the fabric, and they stretch from corner to corner, making them look larger than life. They are the perfect textural canvas for a fun and new quilt that will act as a great vessel for your vast creativity and originality. These panels are already becoming popular in the quilting community, and it’s easy to see why. A perfect background, these inspiring floral designs can easily incorporate many different themes, patterns, designs, and one of my favorites, appliques!
Appliques are great because not only are there so many different designs, but they are fun and easy to use. I prefer to use the applique patterns, as I can use whatever pattern fabric I want or have on hand, and I can more easily tie it into the rest of the quilt. Sometimes creating a cohesive design can be a little tricky, and finding a premade applique to fit the style, theme or color scheme can be even more difficult. This way, I can choose my applique pattern, choose my fabric patterns, and marry them in a beautiful arrangement that will compliment my quilt.
With a panel as grand as the Dream Big floral panels, it may be worth choosing an applique pattern to use on the backside to tie everything together. You could stick with something more simple like Mandala, Kaleidoscope, or Dragonfly. Even something as simple as a letter to personalize your quilt for yourself, or as a gift for a friend or family member. But as we are talking about dreaming big, you could go for a more intricate design such as Blossoms Block, Feathered Blossoms, Radiant Garden or Petal Power. This would create a beautiful quilt no matter which side you looked at it, leaving your quilting friends in awe of your new creation. Hopefully, you’ll inspire them to try something new and outside of their comfort zone as well!
